Bangladesh
is the delta of three powerful rivers:
the Ganges (Padma), the Bramaputra
(Jamuna) and the Meghna. This is the
luck and the curse of the country.
Its luck because it is the reason
for its fertility and its curse because
of the devastating floods at regular
intervals. Bangladesh is a riverine
country and life in many rural areas
is organized around the water. In
the South, in the Bay of Bengal, new
islands of sand and mud appear every
year and are immediatedly occupied
by land-hungry people. |
